The Rape of Africa and other stories...
Last night I walked into a room where David LaChapelle (my idol) was locked into an intense conversation with a priest as they stood next to a giant photograph of Lady Gaga. This was not a dream. I was at the beautiful Robilant + Voena gallery - the London home of David LaChapelle: The Rape of Africa - a politically charged exhibit (taking it's name from the above image) that is hammering home messages of consumerism, poverty, environmental devastation and religion with staggering attention to detail. When I spoke to the man himself, who shared some words of wisdom, he revealed that all of the major decisions in his life have been based on an intuitive feeling. When The LaChapelle was in his 20's he was at a career crossroads and didn't know whether to pursue photography or music (he was in a band). The choice was made after the realisation that he didn't want the kind of attention being in front of the camera warrants. Slightly ironic given the attention he receives from remaining BEHIND the camera. Good decision, David, you are a true inspiration. x x x
